What is Networking?

What is meant by the term networking? Well, in the context of the aspiring fashionista networking is the lifeblood of their profession.  
 
Due to the competitive nature of the creative world, it is absolutely about who you know, making your charisma and personality almost as important as the talent and skills you bring to the proverbial table.


For the fledgling designer there are several ways in which to develop your contact base.  Firstly, if you are still studying you may well have lecturers who are working within the industry.  A good place to start is to prove your mettle in seminars - it is commonplace for students to be called upon to assist with projects in a work placement capacity. 
 
Most work experiences will provide a wealth of potential contacts.  It goes without saying that you should woo your line manager with your skills and dedication, however, remember that everyone in the office has their own set of contacts - these may prove to be just as invaluable to you in the future.  Approaching people can prove very intimidating, especially when they are working, but making the tea and coffee can be the difference between being acknowledged in the corridor and not.  It is also important to be aware that lots of interns will pass through the office, so make an impression, be punctual, be warm and friendly but most importantly be helpful.  Pre-empting what needs to be done and taking initiative may well lead to extended responsibility, resulting in more opportunities to enhance your network.
 
With the influx of social websites such as fashionspace.com and thehospitalclub.com it is easy to put your wares on an international platform, allowing those who may not otherwise see your work to do so and form the foundation for collaborations.
 
Schmoozing is arguably the most effective form of networking.  Event launches are generally a good chance to meet people from different disciplines within the creative industry.  Meeting face to face makes more of an impact than electronic interaction and of course, from your point of view it allows you the chance to employ your charm - all of us like to have our egos stroked (established or otherwise) a sincere compliment never hurt anybody!  On approaching people be polite and eloquent and appreciate that you could be one of any number trying to make an impression, bear in mind that as important as it is to showcase yourself it is equally important not to wear out your welcome.  On a practical note make sure that you have your business card to hand.  The design of which should reflect your style – leaving a wallet-size reminder of you.
 
It is inevitable that on starting out you will meet lots of new faces.  A simple but effective technique is to keep a notebook to hand at all times keeping a record of not just contact information but personal details.  The ability to not only be aware of a practitioners most recent project but to be able to converse about it marks you as an attentive and engaging individual and ultimately stands you in good stead among your peers and competitors.

In establishing yourself within an industry where your network forms the backbone of your career, it is therefore essential that you maintain and nurture that and those within it.

Triumph International Lingerie Design Awards 2008

The Triumph Inspiration Design Award challenges students from prestigious international design schools throughout the world to create a conceptual showpiece – set, comprising of an under-wired bra and brief dedicated to the “female theme” design motto for 2008. Triumph International is the world’s largest underwear manufacturers with a presence in more than 120 countries and so the opportunity to have them manufacture the winners design and sell it as limited edition underwear set was a great opportunity for the students who took part. 
 
The awards took place at the Factory Hall 706 in the bohemian quarter of Beijing on 31st July. On the judging panel sat some of the finest fashion professionals, Dutch design duo Viktor & Rolf, supermodel and fashion photographer Helena Christensen, Ellen Von Unwerth, Sarah (Colette), Lv Van and Jan Rosenberg. The judging criteria was based on innovation and creativity in interpreting the “female theme,” also individuality and uniqueness was a key factor along with the aesthetics quality in design and execution with presentation playing a vital part.

Viktor & Rolf commented on the awards, “What we love most is the fact that the students were asked to free themselves of the commercial side of things – almost no restraints were put on their creativity”.

20 year old Japanese student, Midori Matsuo walked away with 1st prize with her “Under Skin” design (which will be adapted and then manufactured and sold by Triumph) also pocketing €15000. Whilst runner up, Theresa Bachler, 21 from Germany landed €10000 for her “Once upon a lifetime” design and Norwegian Stire Fagervik-Rosen, 28, claimed her €5000 for the “Design for beautiful trash”.

FDC Young Designers Award

Fashion Designers and Craft makers Young Fashion Awards is a not for profit project which was founded in 2002 by knitwear designer Joanna Marcella and aims to reward 9-25 year old fashion designers with exceptional talent and a real passion for fashion. The Young Designer Awards are sponsored by Tyler Media, (multi-media company based in USA, specializing in the creation, development and production of special events within fashion and television) and Barnados (UK’s largest children’s charity supporting over 90 000 children in over 300 projects).  

Each year entrants are asked to source and produce their flamboyant design according to the theme, this years being ‘Hollywood’, they must also include a piece written about their favourite designer. The judges made up of fashion and media industry professionals will be looking for creativity, originality and interpretation of the designers’ idea of the Hollywood theme. The winner will receive a certificate, sewing equipment and promotion for a year as they see their designs showcased in high profile events in the UK, USA and Europe. 
 The FDC Young Designer Awards will take place on 25th October at a prestigious building to be confirmed closer to the date.  “The young designer awards have fast become a creative hub where young designers can come and home in on their skills; showcase their talent which could lead to an international career. There is no other organization out there that is showing this kind of commitment to young fledging designers” Christie Dinham of Tyler Media.  

Previous winners have showcased their designs at New York Fashion Week and Caribbean Fashion Week working alongside top hair and make up stylists and models. Their designs have been seen by the worlds fashion buyers, editors and celebrities. New to the awards this year is the Tyler Media/Children are the Future Award which is given to the student who has excelled creatively and academically throughout; their raw talent will be nurtured as they are given the opportunity to learn about the fashion business and also present their collection at the International Designer Awards.

BBC launches fashion competition in aid of sustainable and ethical fashion

The BBC is holding an exciting new competition, Style Search, to help raise awareness to the importance of ethical fashion and sustainability. Up until the end of August, they are asking aspiring fashionistas and stylists to submit a photo of themselves or a friend, styled in vintage, customised, second hand, fair trade or organic clothes and accessories.  

The Result? 
Judges will whittle down four finalists who will attend London Fashion Week in September and compete in a task to decide the final winner.This winner will assist our stylist at the Thread fashion show. 

How do I apply? 
Once you have styled the outfit, take a digital photo of your creation and send it to the BBC, along with a 150 word description of your ethical creation, including where the clothes and accessories were sourced.

RE: Fashion awards call for entries for the first dedicated ethical fashion awards

RE: Awards are a ground breaking venture sponsored by Ethical Fashion Forum (EFF), Futerra Sustainability Communications (FSC) and Anti Apathy. This is the very first RE: Awards and unlike other fashion awards the real focus is promoting ethical fashion. The awards are open to designers, manufacturers, retailers and students who feel they have contributed towards changing consumer attitudes towards ethical fashion I managed to ask EFF Project Manager, Josie Nicholson, a few questions about the rise into the forefront that ethical fashion is currently undergoing. 

NS: What do you expect from the applicants for RE: Fashion Awards?
JN: Innovation, cutting-edge, and driving positive social and environmental progress within the industry.                                                      

NS: What advice or tips can you give to people who are interested in entering the world of ethical fashion?
JN: For companies the most important thing is transparency – being able to trace your supply chain. With transparency comes better communication and links which could also help open other markets for fair trade, organic and values led producers in the developing world. As a consumer you can choose to use your buying power positively to support businesses with progressive practices to address sustainability.  

NS: Do you think that ethical fashion can compete on fashion runways in Paris, New York, Milan, etc. amongst other more established (less ethical) fashion houses?
JN: Certainly, many of the ethical fashion labels that are being talked about are the most forward thinking labels out there. But it’s not about competing but encouraging ethical practices across the board; ethical processes for example are being embraced by all of the fashion industry including high fashion labels. For RE: Fashion some of the world’s most innovative and highly respected fashion designers will create pieces for the catwalk which are at the cutting edge of aesthetic design and ethics. Already there are a diverse range of designers involved including Zandra Rhodes, Preen, Todd Lynn and Allegra Hicks who will all design a one-off piece exclusively for RE: Fashion.

The CFDA/Vogue fashion fund celebrates its fifth anniversary

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund have announced the 10 finalists of this years Fashion Fund initiative.The Fashion Fund was set up in 2003 to provide financial support and business mentorship for emerging designers. Over more than $1 million has been granted to previous finalists including, now well known fashion innovators, Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Derek Lam and Philip Lim. 


The Fashion Fund is sponsored by the Gap, American Express, Barneys New York, Coach, L’Oreal Paris, Nordstrom and Theory amongst countless others. The 10 finalists include Alexander Wang, the NY based designer launched his collection in 2004, full of clean sleek tailoring conveying that “off-duty model” look; Irene Neuwirth, showcases uniquely modern and sophisticated jewellery; Jason Wu, whose collection focuses on modern evening dressing with the spirit and detailing of haute couture; Richard Chai has worked for Donna Karen, Marc by Marc Jacobs before becoming creative Director at the Ailing brand TSE, his designs are sophisticated wearable and quietly feminine.  

Last week the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund selection committee met with each of the finalists to review their current collections and conduct in-depth interviews involved visits to the design studios of the finalists. The 10 members of the 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund selection committee include Julie Gilhart (Senior Vice President/ Fashion Director, Barneys New York); Sally Singer and Anna Wintour (Fashion News Director and Editor-in-chief, US Vogue); Diane Von Furstenberg (President, CFDA and renown designer) amongst many other sponsors of the Fashion Fund. 

The winner of Fashion Fund will be announced at a gala dinner in NYC on November 17 where they will receive up to $200 000 whilst the 2 runners-up receive up to $50 000. These cash prizes will be used to further develop each designers business in such areas as marketing, public relations, production and sales. Rather than just offering cash to the emerging designers, a panel of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund corporate funders and industry professionals offer mentorship to the winners whose expertise are tailored to each designers goals and needs. 

To further assist the overall finalists the Fashion Fund set up the Business Advisory Committee last year to review the designers in order to provide a more focused business perspective and targeted feedback on their future potential in the fashion business. The seven finalists without cash prizes will therefore be able to use BAC as an ongoing resource for mentoring and guidance. Members of BAC include Susan Davidson (Creative Design Studio), Josh Sparks (Rockwood Management) and Paula Sutter (Diane Von Furstenberg) along with other household names in the fashion business.

Vauxhall Fashion Scout set to astound the fashion industry with its 21st fashion showcase

The most important and widely respected off schedule show in London Fashion Week, Vauxhall Fashion Scout (VFS) is back for the third year running to showcase 20 fashion designers in their catwalk show at Baden Powel House on 14-19 September. 

Each year founders of VFS, John Walford (Co-founder of Graduate Fashion Week) and Martyn Roberts (Previous fashion PR director) continue to provide a professional venue for talented emerging designers whilst also supporting them financially with the sponsorship of Vauxhall. 


Vauxhall, who recently sponsored Britain’s Next Top Model on Living TV, will use the winners from their Face of Tigra promotion as the models for the show making the event stand out amongst other shows during London Fashion Week. VFS is yet another inspiration to the fashion industry in that it helps lead the way for new designers to enter into an industry that otherwise they would have been economically shut out of.  

This year VFS has an even more extensive mentoring scheme in place to nurture, develop and drive forward the designers of the future; previous designers to show at VFS are Julia Clancey, Jens Laugesen, Peter Pilotto and Agonovich.

Margin introduces new area to its street wear tradeshow

Margin, the tradeshow well known as the launch pad for new labels introduces the Selvage area this year highlighting directional denim brands at The Vinyl Factory Gallery W1 on August 3-5.
