Carlotta Gherzi for Sado and Sample New York partner after Nolcha Presents Fall 2010

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Friday, April 02, 2010 0 comments

After success at Nolcha Presents Fall 2010 event at BoConcept this February, Designer Carlotta Gherzi for Sado is coming back to the Big Apple to unveil her Spring Summer 2010 Collection at Sample New York.

“Nolcha gave me the opportunity to meet Sample Studio at the February fashion week event and our partnership began. I am always so thankful to the extent Nolcha takes to find and promote their designers,” says Carlotta.

A key to Carlotta’s inspiration this season is a single water drop, which splashes and flows into the geometric trademark twirl, one that is incorporated into the labels signature print for 2010. Sado’ collection for Spring/Summer 2010 is all about softness, sensuality and layers & is a combination of the earth’s natural elements. The color palette is gold of the sunset in Goa, blue of the Mediterranean sea, green lush of a golf course grass in California, flame red of burning log embers from a Cape Town barbeque and a glimpse of soft grey formed by the passing cloud in the sky after a tropical rain fall over Tobago.

“It is so great to see a young designer really spread her wings. Season after season Carlotta’s pieces get more creative and functional at the same time. The focus on is a specific jet-setting clientele that has really turned into how real on-the-go women want to dress. She dazzles at every event she participates in, so I am not surprised New York Retailers want to pick her up,” explains Lynn Furge, Creative Director of Nolcha: Fashion Business Services.

Sample is located at 268 Elizabeth Street between Houston and Prince. To make an appointment RSVP to samplenewyork@gmail.com

Introducing...Silvia Tcherassi

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Thursday, April 01, 2010 0 comments
Silvia Tcherassi has been in the industry for over 15 years but within that career an international creative mind that now works in Prêt-a-Porter as well as bridal, accessories and as a hotelier. Well known in the Latin American community, Silvia is starting to take the United States by storm with her new collection that echoes the beauty of her new hotel… Creative Director Lynn Furge went backstage with Silvia to find out more about her artistic vision.

Lynn Furge: What is your Spring Summer 2010 collection based off of?

Silvia Tcherassi: I developed this collection and the Tcherassi Hotel at the same time. When I was selecting different plants for a vertical garden, the main attraction of the hotel, I was very impressed with the beautiful colors and shapes of the plants from the vibrant Caribbean. This process was a kind of rediscovery... You don’t need to be an expert on Botanic to see the references in the palette of colors, the silhouettes, and the shapes in a subtle, non obvious way.

LF: You are a humanitarian… how does the work with Unicef inspire your design work?

ST:  I am part of the campaign More Art Less Mines to create awareness about the victims of personal landmines in Colombia. My support to this campaign and many others is genuine. I totally believe in the power of sharing and trying to use my work as creator, and designer to bring awareness to different causes or take advantage of my role to help different charities. Last year I participated with other 40 international designers in a project to benefit different charities in Colombia. BeLive, the organizers, asked us to invent an indigenous bag and I was so happy with the results that I incorporated the concept for my Fall 2010 Accessories Collection. This is a good sample of humanitarian inspiration!

LF: You wrote a book titled “Effortless Elegance.” What do you consider that to be in one simple sentence?

ST: An honest and individual approach to style.

LF: What five things are incorporated into a Tcherassi project, from ready-to-wear, to jewelry, to the hotel and even bridal?

ST: Innovative approach, High quality materials, Caribbean heritage with an international reach, Transparency, Honesty

LF: What do you consider first when designing? Color? Print? Textile?

ST: Fabrics. I don’t sketch. My creative process is very experimental and fabrics are the starting point of this process.

LF: Who is your muse?

ST: Strong and unique young women as Lauren Santodomingo and Anna Dello Russo.

LF: What is next on the horizon for Silvia Tcherassi designs?

ST: The expansion of the Tcherassi fashion and hotel brands and the development of a home and a children collections.

Fashion Takes Action Launches First Canadian Eco Fashion Awards

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 0 comments
When Fashion Takes Action produced the first Green Gala in September 2007, there were only a handful of eco fashion designers in Canada. Nearly three years later, the sustainable fashion landscape has changed dramatically, with designers on both coasts working for the greener good. To recognize this hard work, FTA has launched its first annual award: FTA Design Forward.

“We felt it was time to recognize the leaders in the sustainable fashion movement”, states FTA Founder Kelly Drennan. “These are the designers who should be applauded for their pioneering work, and for showing the rest of the fashion industry how easy, and stylish, it is to go green”.

But this is not just about promoting the best of the best. FTA is a business-to-business organization that provides resources and tools to help the fashion industry become more sustainable.  So to stand apart from other contests, FTA has chosen to pull back the curtain and show the public what really goes on behind the scenes. They believe that all too often this is where eco fashion lives (and even hides); and that it is the story behind the garment where one truly discovers that it is sustainable. Drennan believes that transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of any sustainable business, and that the same standard should apply to the fashion industry as well.

With close to forty designers in the initial round, FTA developed a set of criteria to help narrow the list, and weed out those whose eco efforts either fell a bit short of the rest of the pack, or who were mistakenly positioning their brand as one that is sustainable.

The criterion cover four categories:

  1. Materials Used (organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester, etc);
  2. Production (local, fair trade, closed-loop environment etc);
  3. Design (quality, style, wear-ability)
  4. Special Features (educate customers on eco friendly laundering techniques, alignment with an environmental charity, hangtags printed on FSC certified high post consumer recycled paper, etc)

Fourteen designers came through the filtering process, and now FTA is inviting the public to vote online for their favourite eco fashion designer. Voters are encouraged to read each designer profile to see how they hold up to the criteria, and compare to one another. “Understanding what eco fashion means can sometimes be quite confusing”, states Drennan.  “And we hope that the criteria will be helpful for consumers when placing their vote”. FTA has included their own comments with each profile, pointing out what they like, and where they think there is room for improvement (since perfection doesn’t really exist yet).

This exercise in transparency is an important one that FTA sees happening on a larger scale. As major apparel corporations feel the pressure to become more transparent in their supply chain (with respect to both social and environmental impacts), it is important for this same level of transparency to translate across fashion businesses of all sizes. It benefits the business, as they begin to understand where they can be doing more, and it provides the consumer with a clear and honest look at what these businesses are really doing to make positive changes.

The fourteen nominees are:

  • Thieves
  • Elladora
  • Elroy
  • Paper People Clothing
  • Laura Chenoweth
  • Revolve Clothing Co.
  • Nicole Bridger
  • Salts Organic
  • Preloved
  • Lav & Kush
  • deux fm
  • Nixxi
  • flora&fauna
  • We3 (twigg&hottie)

The public voting process will end Friday April 16, 2010. The top three designers will then face a judging panel
that consists of: eco model, activist, author and designer Summer Rayne Oakes; sustainability consultant Lorraine Smith who has expertise in textiles and life-cycle assessment; and EcoSalon Fashion Editor and green fashion expert Amy DuFault. The judges will ask each finalist a series of questions that dig a bit deeper into the four criteria.

The winner will be announced later in the month, and will be awarded a prize
that has a value of over $50,000:

  • A free membership in Fashion Takes Action
  • A three-month PR campaign, provided by Third Eye Media
  • Eco friendly fabric to produce a sample collection of 30 pieces courtesy of Telio
  • Participation at Nolcha Fashion Week’s Ethical Fashion Preview in NYC in September 2010
  • Travel and accommodation for two to NYC, provided by Air Miles Reward Program
  • Look book photo shoot with full creative team including photographer, models, hair & makeup and stylist
  • Look book graphic design, and $1,000 towards Fair trade and Organic certification, provided by Ecocert

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Gabby Applegate

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Monday, March 22, 2010 0 comments
The final day of Box Eight’s LA Fashionweek 2010 presentations, were denim-packed and as relaxed as the atmosphere. My hat goes off to you Box Eight, Kravitz PR and Ben Cope and all of the many people who helped create the last four evenings. Dior Beauty keyed by Garett Gervais was fitting and well done for this evenings designers as was the hair by Michael Unite.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said of Gabby Applegate who did not seem to have her barings for this presentation. There was a hodgepodge of pieces that neither seemed like the belonged together or in the same collection for that matter. Each designer had the ability to create their own photo instillation space and Gabby chose an antique chair in the middle of the cyc. Nothing original.

The collection was a mix of lace, leggings, leather bomber jackets with 2 hoodies, one made out of lace, the other made of silk. Jersey dresses and tops, with a little camouflage thrown in just to mix it all up.

All look like you could already find them in the retail world, however, I did have a favorite piece… a black Mohair bomber jacket which is a bit of the understated luxury that LA loves.

Just as fashion week had many bad seasons but kept trying and came out on top, I suggest she do the same.

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Zak

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Monday, March 22, 2010 0 comments

Zak was a last minute add on after Orthodox pulled out of the show at the last minute. The staff had tight lips concerning the reason.

For the amount of pressure that he must have endured to pull it off in one day, he did a fantastic job.

Mainly a men’s denim line with some stylish basic tees and woven knits at great price points, the jeans retail at $75 -$120. While the pieces on their own were not too original the cohesiveness of the overall brand and the fits were spot on, the garments were well assembled and had some very strong details on the shirt pockets and vests.

For what this was I feel he nailed it.

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Future Heretics

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Monday, March 22, 2010 0 comments
The designer’s photo instillation shot by Peter Gurnz built an area that was an industrial element simply done with black painted wood beams with florescent light boxes on them…

Again the basis of this line is premium Denim. While there were no surprises in this collection however the craftsmanship, fits and cut of the garments were well done and the collection itself had a cohesive flow to it. Mostly muted in color with a military influence for both the men and women. My favorite was the deer hide red leather short shorts and the treated and distressed bomber denim jacket.

Keep up the good work.

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Postage

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Monday, March 22, 2010 0 comments
Postage is completely designed and manufactured right here in our own backyard and yet still manages to keep the jeans at a really reasonable price point between $120-$175. While there are no surprises in this line either, I did like the metallic wash that they used on some of their denim pieces.

A couple more seasons of growing their brand and it will be one to remember.

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Kanvis

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Monday, March 22, 2010 0 comments
A carefully placed white rope hung from the ceiling and a platform went in and out of the instillation echoing space and time, which was simple but effective in creating a futuristic vibe at the Kanvis presentation this evening.

After several seasons of a break for the line the 2010 collection was cohesive, direct and well thought out for being mainly a denim line making it my favorite of the evening. Kfir, the designer, really nailed his market.

I would give praise to their fit, cuts and craftsmanship of the garments themselves as well as the vision that carried on the minimalist no hype theme throughout the men’s and women’s lines and made them work together. There were subtle contrasting fabrics and textures draped and asymmetrical.

Not to be ignored, accessorizing the whole collection was M Cohen who has created a nice name for himself in the past few years with his, bohemian chic beaded, roped and linked bracelets layered upon each other like a wristcuff.

Two of my favorite pieces were the Alpaca/wool blend poncho and the cotton twill jodphur pants with a suede treatment to them.

I think that the quality and the practicality will keep this line on the racks of our favorite boutiques for years to come.

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Michael Costello

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Sunday, March 21, 2010 0 comments
My new favorite to emerge from the hip LA fashion scene is Michael Costello. This Palm Springs based designer took the audience shook us and gave us a slap in the face with his mesmerizing and beautifully draped gowns and dresses. Michael has owned a boutique in Palm Spring since he was 14 making him no stranger to the fashion world.

Sophisticated, elegant fabrics and gorgeous detail could best encapsulate this presentation. Black hand macramé circles sewn together with beautiful crocheted lace draped in to an amazing backless gown really took the crowds breath away. Equally stunning was the “Sabrina Wedding dress”. Sabrina claims Michael was made as he draped it pinned it and stitched it up in less than 2 hours. Made out of upholstery fabric turned inside out with a crystal breastplate and oversized hand made 85 petal flowers, which were burnt and frayed nothing other than masterpiece could describe it.

If I were a financial backer interested in fashion I would bet my fortune on this mans future success.  Thank you for a great display of pure fashion excitement Michael!

Box Eight LA Fashionweek 2010: Lloyd Klein

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Sunday, March 21, 2010 0 comments
When you are a trained architect turned fashion designer you get Lloyd Klein’s amazing structured garments that nip in and grow grand in the right places.

Inspired by Le Corbusier the early 1800’s modern furniture designer and architect, Klein unveiled a series of pieces that echoed the architectural sentiment with modern minimalistic cuts.

Known for shiny, jeweled and glitter fabrics with lots of bright colors, the designer shocked the crowd as there were none to be found for Fall 2010.

I rather liked the minimalist approach that he took to stay true to his inspiration with muted color, grays and camel wool.

The futuristic highly structured camel wool jacket with wool belt was superb as was my other favorite a beautifully structured grey wool dress.

Lloyd is another fashion design veteran who appears to be enjoying the fruit of his past labor and is now enjoying his craft and art.
