Academy of Art University in San Francisco Graduate Collections

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Friday, February 13, 2009

Anja Rubik, Karlie Kloss, Chanel ImanSince 2005, the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California has showcased recent graduate collections during Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. T
his season, one menswear and five womenswear collections from the Fashion Design, Textile Design and Knitwear Design made their way into the tents for fashion critics to get a taste of the new breed of talent.
“We view this opportunity as part of our commitment to help launch the careers of our graduates,“ said Dr. Elisa Stephens, University President. “In addition, we create team projects and collaborative collections to help prepare these designers for the industry they are about to enter. Four collaborations were shown this season.”
The true beauty of this project was indeed in the collaboration.  Creating innovation in not only design but textiles students had to meld their vision into one ready to wear collection.
Qianya Martin, a native Californian who produced knitwear representing many facets of the ocean stating that the collection is about “tuning into the purest nature of yourself and just being accepted for the beauty of who and what you are.”
Heather Howard turned out eco-friendly prints based on the photographs of American life in the late 1800’s.
Sculptural knitwear strutted down the catwalk courtesy of Scott McFarland who is a formally trained sculptor.  He made his own yarn by cutting lace fabric into strips and hand-knitting them to create the heavier knits for coats. Yarn was donated by www.blueskyalpacas.com.
I-Shan Liou was inspired by the mood of Sam Francis’ paintings of earth, water, air and firefor her silhouette, color story and irreverent use of soft luxurious angora yarn. Myoung Hee Kim hand painted her bright designs onto paper; heat transferred them onto chiffon and then bonded to I-Shan’s knitted fabrics. She also hand painted rice paper and bonded the paper to the knits.
Emily Melville developed her silhouettes by draping wool fabric on a dress form to experiment three-dimensionally and used creative cutting techniques to construct unconventional shapes. Ivanka Georgieva combined screen-print, dye, iron, and pigment discharge techniques to recreate the look of landscape paintings inspired by the work of artist Leslie Shows.
A staple in American fashion production for over 50 years, Britex Fabrics hosted a class project where MFA Fashion Design students were asked to create a collection from their fabrics as well.
