Tokyo Fashion Week Fall 2010: Shinmai Creators Project

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Monday, March 22, 2010
The independent designer competitions have become favorites for editors and buyers alike. Who doesn’t want to find that diamond in the rough and grab them for an exclusive in their store/publication, and Tokyo was one to watch for that very reason.

The Shinmai design competition housed three up-and-coming labels that did not disappoint. A Degree of Fahrenheit by Yu Amatsu took simple classics like the trench coat and turned them into sculptural explosions. Recognizable by color, fabric and fastenings alone, trench bodysuits, bustiers and evening gowns sauntered down the runway. Pops of red by way of half gloves and tights also accompanied the pieces which were joined by a lot of black looks that were draped, cropped and lopped (off at the arm).
Akane Utsonomiya sent down a knitwear collection with interesting bursts of brights seen beneath the wide necks or snags. The bandage pieces were basic and have been seen before but the feather-light finishing look with woven lurex tights was a knock-out.
Fabiola Arias channeled the soft romantic quality of petals with dress after dress of soft tiered layers. The volume continued by use of ostrich plumes, but sometimes the collection read more spring than fall.
The Individualists by Luise Schwarze and Franck Pouchoulin played up that Elongated Layers trend that we saw throughout the mens shows in Milan and Paris, with a palette of black an cream mostly, which made the actual length and texture of the chosen fabrics take center stage. Their womenswear was softer with layered knitwear.
