This weekend I returned to my roots, in Louisville, Kentucky- Yes Ma'am the 16th largest city in the country. Small potatoes compared to a lot of middle-of-the-road cosmopolitan towns in America but Louisville's advantage, is surprisingly on the rise with a fantastic growth spurt in the arts.
Many new developments in the city are creating more of an art-centric vibe around town including: 21c Museum Hotel, Fabulous Market Street, and many new restaurants that merge concept-based cuisine with a unique ambiance, like Proof on Main Street. Upon entering the boutique hotel, 21c where we enjoyed our stay among the modern art that decorates the entire place- I happened to stumble upon a Nick Cave Soundsuit, one of the many works from my professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Louisville's classic charm is what makes it such a great place to visit, but don't worry drive far enough south and you might still see some gnarly, painted lawn ornaments, mullets and cut-off jean shorts (not cute ones).
But where else- in such a commercialized country- can you have dinner on a classic plane air-strip and bump into your old tennis pro from childhood? Louisville. It's a city where you grow and learn and enjoy the pleasures of life once you've exhausted yourself running city blocks in 5" heels rolling heavy racks down a street. You appreciate a bird chirping every once in awhile in Chicago- but in Louisville you might just see an Oriole just land on your fence post.
This just goes to prove that sometimes you need to go back home to remember what influenced you in the first place.
