Syracuse University Vision with Action 2009 Juried Senior Show

Christa Johnson Syracuse UniversityThe Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts 2009 Senior Juried Fashion Show took place on Wednesday, June 3 at the JP Morgan Chase Center on 270 Park Avenue in Manhattan.

The event started with cocktails and mingling in the press lounge as the students spoke about their collections, what inspired them and their plans for the future.  Students and extremely proud parents took part in the silent auction.  A slew of photographers were on site to take photos of the student designers in front of the step and repeat.  Tom Filicia,  of Style Networks Dress my Nest,  participated in photos with students as well as speaking with them as what I can only imagine was advice on the future.  It should be noted that Mr. Filicia is a graduate of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
As the mingling came to an end, we were ushered upstairs to another room where the fashion show was to take place.  Guest gathered in chairs awaiting the top 14 collections from the 2009 graduating class from the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
The students who presented their collections were Meredith Banzhoff, Elisha Beinart, Sara Efron, Kristin Hollins, Christa Johnson, Stephanie Latocha, Ayak Matsui, Anthony J. Palmieri, ChanMi Park, Lindsey Scarlatelli, Lacey Ryan Seltzer, Randi Spoon, Tara Strobach and Laura Zailac.
Each student presented six looks. Separating the students set of looks was a short change in music.  As their final look arrived on the catwalk, the respective student was introduced and preceded to join their model on their final leg down the runway.
The standout collections of the evening were by Elisha Beinart, Sara Efron and Christa Johnson.
Elisha Beinart  had a marvelous collection that contained the most interesting presentation of the evening. All six models walked out in unison.  As the models were in front of me, I could see they were connected by a continuous heather gray jacket. One by one, the models unhooked themselves from each other by the snaps on the jacket and walked back down the runway.  Heavy pleating and generous pin tucks gave the brightly colored linen dresses a fashion forward look that was anything but dowdy.  Black tights covered the models shoes, as so the emphasis remained on the garments.
Sara Efron’s collection held my favorite look of the night.  It consisted of a maroon satin artfully pieced together dress, which cascaded over a volumous light pink tutu.  Fabulously crafted and exquisitely draped, I wanted to take that outfit home with me right then and there.  The pallet of navy, mauve, light pink and maroon encompassed the satin drenched collection of hoodies, high wasted pants and wide leg shorts.  All these looks were definitely a crowd pleaser.
Christa Johnson was my all around favorite collection of the evening.  Her excessively baggy pants with low drop crotch were well refined.  She was the only designer of the evening to create pants with such a fashion forward silhouette.  Her stand out look consisted of a 70’s print pink and brown knee length jumpsuit, which contained shoulder pads that were not so hidden, as they were prominently stacked on the outside.  The construction, fashion forward thinking and cohesiveness of her collection are all why Christia stood out from the crowd.
