Fashion Takes Action Launches First Canadian Eco Fashion Awards

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 0 comments
When Fashion Takes Action produced the first Green Gala in September 2007, there were only a handful of eco fashion designers in Canada. Nearly three years later, the sustainable fashion landscape has changed dramatically, with designers on both coasts working for the greener good. To recognize this hard work, FTA has launched its first annual award: FTA Design Forward.

“We felt it was time to recognize the leaders in the sustainable fashion movement”, states FTA Founder Kelly Drennan. “These are the designers who should be applauded for their pioneering work, and for showing the rest of the fashion industry how easy, and stylish, it is to go green”.

But this is not just about promoting the best of the best. FTA is a business-to-business organization that provides resources and tools to help the fashion industry become more sustainable.  So to stand apart from other contests, FTA has chosen to pull back the curtain and show the public what really goes on behind the scenes. They believe that all too often this is where eco fashion lives (and even hides); and that it is the story behind the garment where one truly discovers that it is sustainable. Drennan believes that transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of any sustainable business, and that the same standard should apply to the fashion industry as well.

With close to forty designers in the initial round, FTA developed a set of criteria to help narrow the list, and weed out those whose eco efforts either fell a bit short of the rest of the pack, or who were mistakenly positioning their brand as one that is sustainable.

The criterion cover four categories:

  1. Materials Used (organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester, etc);
  2. Production (local, fair trade, closed-loop environment etc);
  3. Design (quality, style, wear-ability)
  4. Special Features (educate customers on eco friendly laundering techniques, alignment with an environmental charity, hangtags printed on FSC certified high post consumer recycled paper, etc)

Fourteen designers came through the filtering process, and now FTA is inviting the public to vote online for their favourite eco fashion designer. Voters are encouraged to read each designer profile to see how they hold up to the criteria, and compare to one another. “Understanding what eco fashion means can sometimes be quite confusing”, states Drennan.  “And we hope that the criteria will be helpful for consumers when placing their vote”. FTA has included their own comments with each profile, pointing out what they like, and where they think there is room for improvement (since perfection doesn’t really exist yet).

This exercise in transparency is an important one that FTA sees happening on a larger scale. As major apparel corporations feel the pressure to become more transparent in their supply chain (with respect to both social and environmental impacts), it is important for this same level of transparency to translate across fashion businesses of all sizes. It benefits the business, as they begin to understand where they can be doing more, and it provides the consumer with a clear and honest look at what these businesses are really doing to make positive changes.

The fourteen nominees are:

  • Thieves
  • Elladora
  • Elroy
  • Paper People Clothing
  • Laura Chenoweth
  • Revolve Clothing Co.
  • Nicole Bridger
  • Salts Organic
  • Preloved
  • Lav & Kush
  • deux fm
  • Nixxi
  • flora&fauna
  • We3 (twigg&hottie)

The public voting process will end Friday April 16, 2010. The top three designers will then face a judging panel
that consists of: eco model, activist, author and designer Summer Rayne Oakes; sustainability consultant Lorraine Smith who has expertise in textiles and life-cycle assessment; and EcoSalon Fashion Editor and green fashion expert Amy DuFault. The judges will ask each finalist a series of questions that dig a bit deeper into the four criteria.

The winner will be announced later in the month, and will be awarded a prize
that has a value of over $50,000:

  • A free membership in Fashion Takes Action
  • A three-month PR campaign, provided by Third Eye Media
  • Eco friendly fabric to produce a sample collection of 30 pieces courtesy of Telio

Nolcha, DKT Communications and PimTim launch "Branded" a Contest for Independent Designers

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Friday, October 30, 2009 0 comments

mishabarone.jpgAfter an in-depth review of Nolcha’s network of independent fashion designers, the award-winning, multifaceted fashion services company -- in partnership with branding and marketing communications firm DKT Communications and graphic-design crowdsourcing platform PimTim -- honored rising star Michelle Barone as the winner of “Branded: Nolcha’s Contest for the Independent Designer.”
Created to help independent fashion designers jump-start their branding initiatives, “Branded” provides the winner with the building blocks of their brand identity and messaging. The prize package is valued at $1,700 and consists of a logo, designer profile and professional headshot produced by the creative minds behind Nolcha, DKT Communications and PimTim.
“Nolcha is a business network for independent designers at all stages in their career,” says Nolcha creative director Lynn Furge. “Therefore, to be able to partner with both DKT Communications and PimTim to help Michelle Barone -- a young, fresh designer -- create her brand image is so exciting and important. The initial branding of Michelle’s label will be the skeleton that holds the business together, and Nolcha cannot wait to see the results.”
Barone, the visionary behind the Misha Barone label (www.mishabarone.com), agrees. “Every new opportunity leads you to another. Gaining these tools and elements will no doubt assist me in the next step of the process. I think it is a wonderful thing when artists and out-of-the-box thinkers are able to come together in collaboration. That’s what makes the creative world so incredible. It’s definitely a comforting support system.”
To be rolled out annually, the contest is an excellent vehicle to spark designers’ interest in branding while vying for the opportunity to win the services of some of the best names in the industry. From crafting the brand story to designing its identity to shaping its message, branding must be at the core of every business strategy.
“The story of the people behind an idea, a product or a design is the essence – the soul -- of the brand,” says Dawn Terrick, president of DKT Communications, Inc. “And Michelle’s radiating energy and cutting-edge creativity make for a fantastic tale – one that I look forward to telling. Playing a part in the growth of Michelle’s label by providing her with a designer profile that she can use to promote herself and her work across various marketing channels, thus contributing to the Misha Barone brand, is extremely rewarding.”
Further capturing the young designer’s spirit is PimTim. An online marketplace for graphic design, where buyers and creatives connect, PimTim is challenging talent from all over the world to design the new identity for the Misha Barone label.
“This is what PimTim is all about -- giving people the possibility to connect to talent all over the world,” says PimTim founder Vincent Bröring. “We are very proud to support the branding of the Misha Barone label, and our talented community of graphic designers around the world is happy to help. They will unleash their creativity!”

Thousands of fans logged on to stylebakery.com to vote for their favorite in the categories of: clothing, jewelry, handbags, accessories, children’s and beauty.  Style bakery creator, Jennifer Davidson has mouse on the pulse of on-line fashion.

Stand-out alinamichele won for the Reader’s Choice in handbags.  With a background in graphic design she created a two-in-one that was too good to pass up.  Usually a clutch is the perfect evening accessory, and a woman’s decision lies in what to pair with it… ring or bracelet.  These clutches have bracelets attached which can be removed for individual use.

Tulay Altin of Tulina crafted her handbags based on the inspiration of Renee Magritte titling her collection “Wings” The size of the bag, combined with the shape and colour, add to it’s daytime luxury appeal that the current market is so obsessed with.

For imagery alone, ZSEGA by Zsuzsa Kovacs and Jessica Richard have won the vote.  A closer look reveals unique linings, hand made prints and exquisite draping.  The colour palette is neutral and the thought put into the entire marketing of the brand is impressive for only one full year of being in business.
