London Fashion Week Day 3

9/16 Kaviar Gauche
10:30 am
It was clear that the duo spent a lot of time finding quality fabric to complete their collection. Muted sage green like the underside of a leaf and just as soft, came down the runway in way of a one shoulder maxi gown - a little like Alber Elbaz last spring, but still lovely.  Aside from that the pieces did not flow enough. The handbags and the gold pearl accents mixed with the pearl detail on the necklines were stand-outs and that should have been what they concentrated on.

11:00am Nicole Fahri
Nicole Fahri showcased a beautiful collection at the Royal Opera House this morning. Fahri’s woman is clearly a young professional that wants to be taken seriously without compromising her femininity. There was a real sophistication to the collection. Although very predictable of spring/summer, she produced beautiful floral dresses layered under soft cashmere cardigans and trench coats. Many say that there was strong Laura Ashley 70s appeal. Dresses were nipped in at the waist with bright coloured belts, bringing the look bang up-to-date and accentuating the female form. Dresses were striped in white with both red and blue over striped cropped sleeved tops. Fahri could not restrain from making a political statement with her collection about the current presidency battle in America, using Obama promotional badges on the dresses.

16/9 Laura Lees
12:30 am
Skulls have been in fashion for a couple of seasons now. You know if you've seen them on the pages of OK then they are already out... but you haven't seen them this way. Laura Lees brings a Haitian colourful vibe to the "day of the dead" motif. Reminiscent of Betsy Johnson's early vibe before she became strictly pin-up. The flouncy skirts, cropped skinnies and embroidered dresses brought something new-ish to the mix. The beauty of this collection was that it was succinct, thought out and fluid though out all 30+ pieces.

16/9 Make Your Mark in Fashion
3:00 pm
Make your Mark, Nolcha and yours truly, Metier Magazine took over the Hospital Club in honor of our trademark mentor/mentee program where new designers get to work with those already established in the business to compete for a cash prize. Mia (designing for Junky Styling) showed military influenced jackets so ruched and deconstructed that you knew when the jacket was flipped right side up and when the same jacket was reversed upside down. Berrie (designing for Enamore) sent 50's inspired pin-up down the runway. The patterns were beautiful in secondary geometrics of royal blue, purple, fuchsia and yellow. The knitwear needed a little finer gauge and it would have been a hit.R.A.J.E. (designing for THC) showcased silky slip dresses printed with street graffiti. Good effort, but a little short. Judges deliberated and MIA was deemed the winner.

The house was packed and with good cause. Although many young British designers try to emulate Vivienne Westwood, few can actually tailor. The dresses were absolutely chic-in greys, navy’s and ubiquitous black and white. The sleeveless tuxedo blouses were finished with perfection and the jewelled details added just the right feminine touch. When stating the word "collection" this is what buyers and editors are looking for.

16/9/08 19:00 Afshin Feiz
Last season Afshin Feiz was heralded the 'designer to watch', with many claiming that he would be the next Giles. This is a lot of pressure by anyone's standards. Last Night, Feiz rose to the expectation and proved why he has gained such critical acclaim so early on in his fashion career. His strength clearly lies in the fact that he understands how to make women look amazing. The collection was full of beautiful dresses with cut out pieces on the sides on the waist. Several dresses had cut out backs with a T shaped bar with jewel like embroidery. These simple flashes of flesh on the back and the waist best appeal to a woman who loves to be subtly sexy without screaming it. Feiz used a fresh colour palette of pinks, creams, light blues and greens adding to the femininity of the dresses and their soft flowing silhouettes. The collection built on several current trends such as the pegged leg high waisted trouser. Ruffles were also used on body conscious dresses. I predict this is going to be a hit collection for the designer. Feiz has officially made himself ‘hot property’ for the coming season.
