Illinois State University student show included a keynote address and Q&A session with Tim Gunn followed by a fashion show featuring the designs of students in the Apparel, Merchandising, and Design program.
The theme of the show was Sustainability and the students created “Green Chic” designs with environmentally friendly fabrics, little or no fabric waste, and post-consumer fabrics. The show was planned and produced by a group of 7 student fashion show directors, 50 student models, and 20 student designers. The designers competed with each otherfor both runway appearance and construction.
Incorporating Cradle to Cradle concepts into their designs, sourcing environmental fabrics and sticking to the green theme Apparel Merchandising and Design Club President Caroline Helmkamp took some time to explain her inspiration and organization of the event
“I learned that green fabrics can be found anywhere. If you use an old t-shirt and you can reconstruct into anything you want. Fabrics don’t just have to be organic to bes ustainable. The concepts of post consumer construction and cradle to cradle offer other alternatives of “being green” without the use of organic fabrics. Organic fabrics are pretty much like there non-organic counterparts interms of sewing and the look,” said Helmkamp.
Sara Hunt- Bollhorst won won best collection in the competition part of the showcase.
Alison Richmond, who’s design is seen here started working on her concept at the beginning of the school year. Inspired by different periods in history elements of the 60’s and 70’s can be seen inher designs and it is that bit of “rocker flare” as she calls it that caught our editors eye at Nolcha.
All students found the dying of the garments (using only natural dyes) tobe the most challenging part of the process. Some colors that they desired were unattainable while others were tohard to mix to realize the final look.
All in all, green fashion done by young bright students is the wave ofthe future and as technology grows so will all of their collections.
