Interview | Agnes Valentine

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Sunday, April 19, 2009

With almost a decade in strategic marketing and a passion for sketching, Agnes Cushnie has followed her long-time dream and launched a swimwear line called Agnes Valentine.  With the One Piece becoming the hottest trend for summer, we took notice.
Today I have finally found the confidence to turn my long term passion into life.

Lynn Furge:  Why swim-wear?

Agnes Cushnie:  I feel that this segment of the market has enough room for differentiation. The inspiration also probably comes from my daughter, as I was looking for a fresh and practical swimsuit for her and couldn’t find what I was looking for. This led to the creation of my range for little girls.

LF:  What do you feel you have to offer as far as difference of product to the swim fashion category?

AC:  I want to offer an alternative to women who want to feel desirable and fashion forward in a swimsuit in an understated manner.  I want to treat the swimsuit as an extension of a woman's wardrobe and focus on detailing as much as functionality. I focus less on extravagant embellishment and more on the architectural cut.

LF :  Who is your muse?

AC:  Cate Blanchett, for her innate sense of seduction, and fresh take on fashion.

LF:  What 3 things distinguish a Agnes Valentine suit from other swimwear?

AC:  Besides focusing on a fantastic fit, I try to differentiate based on the following:
be deceptively simple, using minimalism and intricate details.
providing both vintage and modern appeal.
focusing on a constructed silhouette.

LF:  Let’s talk about your color choices:

AC:  Colors are very relevant to me, and I use them as an element of seduction. It’s all about being noticed!  For my first collection, my inspiration came from natural elements. Plum, nude, tangerine and shades of blue came from imagined sunset scenes and earthy vibes.
LF:  How can you empower a woman to feel comfortable with herself in a swimsuit?

AC:  By providing a superior fit while making a clear fashion statement.  I want to create contemporary suits without compromising on the practical element of the garment. The essence is to remain feminine and body flattering, while being seductive as well. I put the accent on structured and geometric lines.
Lines and symmetry will always be an element of the signature look.

LF:  What does the future hold for Agnes Valentine?

AC:  I am launching a capsule children range this summer and preparing new pieces from the women swear swimwear range to exhibit in September. This is just the beginning…
