New York Fashion Week Spring 2010: Academy of Art San Francisco

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Sunday, September 13, 2009

Academy_of_Art_San_Francisco_Spring_2010The largest accredited private art and design school in the US Academy of Art San Francisco conquered Bryant Park with innovative designs from some of fashion’s future ones to watch.
Using this as a career launching pad six designers took to the tents:
Marina Nikolaeca Popska gave the audience Missoni-esque knitwear with eye-popping color.  The ruffles were a little too much up against the print, but once she starts gauging the fit of the garment better, her pieces will be showstoppers.
Kara Sennett looked to David Hockney for inspiration citing “Beverly Hills Housewife” the painting as the theme for the show.  Neon Brights 60’s sunglasses and super short shorts (already a theme within NY Fashionweek) came down the runway.  Her color palette of aquas and pinks was absolutely perfect.
Amanda Cleary experimented with textiles by bonding Lurex to cotton twill.  The result was boxy with a bit of sheen… almost Marnie-inspired in terms of shape.
Richelle Valenzuela seemed to be a crowd favorite.  His collection was pretty with silk organza ripples flouncing down the runway by way of skirts, dresses and jackets.  The collection was done impeccably but was not something we haven’t seen if anyone remembers Project Runway last season.
Brittney Major was a preppy girls dream.  Classic American sportswear with a young point of view her entire collection was made up of plaid.  The windbreaker will give Burberry a run for their money.
Jie Pan paired contrasting shapes and fabrics such as horsehair and silk chiffon or natural linen with organza.  The result was a collage of colors and pieces.  The palette was beautiful, modern a little bit graphic with a hint of space age thrown in.
Sawanya Jomthepmala knows how to cut a pant, which for young designers is never usually the case.  There was lots of hip detail accentuation on stiff pockets with peplums on the jackets to emphasize the point.  Bright, sunny, stand-out construction accompanied with Jonathan Saunders-esque prints.
