Behind the Scenes: Fashion Stylist Naila Chbib

Posted by fashionentrepreneurreport On Saturday, June 06, 2009

social life magazine spring 2009After weeks of preparation Social Life Magazine produced their first photoshoot of the "season" in New York. Stylist Naila Chbib and photographer Jamie Isaia joined forces to recreate a Great Gatsby/ 30’s environment for the lifestyle luxury magazine.
As the stylist for the piece Chbib had to dedicate days combing over designers lookbooks to pull the perfect pieces that would represent the 30's inspiration that she and the photographer were trying to represent.  To accomplish this a stylist has to pull a little bit from everywhere whether it be different design houses, vintage boutiques and even prop warehouses.
"One designer would have the perfect beaded skirt, the other one would have a pair of satin T strap shoes, a vintage boutique the ideal pic-nic baskette, and another jewelry designer the most amazing dropped earrings. To be a stylist you need to be ressourful and have a good eye." explained Naila.
A photoshoot like this, two models, 6 looks, takes days for a stylist to work on. It starts from deciding on a direction with the photographer, lighting, and story to make research of historical references.
"A photoshoot is like a story of a girl the reader will follow around. Clothes need absolutely to fit a certain style in each images.  You need to think as if you were the girl ; who is she ? what are her tastes ? what would she wear  and what would she not wear ?" says Naila.  Because telling a story on location is one of the hardest things to do in terms of editorial work, Naila would organize pre-fittings with the models in order to build the entire story.
After weeks of intense preparations, hours of driving to the location and more hours of hair and make up, the samples are unpacked and the story unfolds.
Models Daria S from IMG and Yasmina interacted in a English garden during an afternoon secret garden tea party.

The work is never done however, as days of post-production from page lay-outs to garment credits await.
