Whether you are looking for Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gucci, Rolex or any other reputable fashion designer label, you can always find a replica product that costs sometimes only one tenth as much, if you don't mind giving up quality. The real dilemma is not the cheap bargain, but instead the constant battle between designers innovating and copyright infringers imitating.
The obvious, is that these designer brands are successful because of their creative sense for fashion and marketing. Whereas the imitators look to capitalize on all the hard work, thought, expense and many times the brand name itself, usually for the fast score. Just take a trip to Manhattan or to New York's Chinatown and you'll see the wide array of brand named handbags, watches, and shoes that you can buy for a fraction of the real cost.
Action has been on the rise as The Council of Fashion Designers of America is leading the way with a lobbying campaign in Washington for new anti-copying laws. Some designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg and Zac Posen have even been traveling to Washington to speak in favor of copyright protection. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York shared that, "Designers spend countless hours doing and redoing, testing, creating, thinking, and then some counterfeiter comes along and just takes it away. It's stealing, plain and simple."
Sister and Designers Nichole and Natascha Shamlian of Je'Marie PurseHook & Accessories share the same desire for copyright protection. These two sisters have been credited with putting the Handbag Hanger back on the map. Although the tabletop Purse Hook was first patented in the early 1900's, then in fashion during the 20's and 40's, the overall design was nowhere as fashionable as it is today. After Nichole's find of a vintage purse hook at an estate sale, the sister's imagination took off. They added crystals, Fusion Glass and hand crafted Femo Clay to their product with instant success. Within months they had boutique accounts all over San Diego and shortly after their products went Nationwide. But, it wasn't too long before knock offs started to show up. "I'll never forget, the first time I saw an imitation of our designs, it took my breath away" says Natascha, "That's when we knew we had to create new and more unique products to stay well ahead of the pack."
That's when the girl's went into action after listening to what their customers were looking for and created the FUMI - Fashionable Unique Multipurpose Innovation. The Purse Hook that hangs on the outside of the handbag making it a purse accessory and triples as a beautiful bangle bracelet. And then, the Scarlett, the handbag accessory that accents the look of any handbag that also cleans sunglasses and cell phones. www.theFUMI.com
"It is sort of flattering and it definitely adds credibility to our company when these upstarts steal our ideas" adds Nichole "they really aren't fooling anyone, the fashion industry knows who they are, especially the ones who make false claims to someone else's creativity. We are a company that thrives on positive energy and unique accessories with positive names to make you feel good about yourself." "One way you can tell our designs from the others is that every piece has our mom's signature on it," says Natascha.
The sisters launched a new style of the FUMI in Las Vegas at WWD MAGIC August 31-September 2.
